I’ve never given the staycation thing a chance, but now that I visited the Backstay Hostel and Bar, I might think otherwise.
The hostel and bar are located in the beautiful art deco building that was formerly the home of newspaper Vooruit. My love for art deco buildings runs deep, needless to say I fell in love with it as soon I stepped into the hostel.
Though renovated last year to accomodate the traveler’s need, they preserved the historic building well and every corner has something referring to the building’s past. The dorms are each and everyone of them named after an (inter)national newspaper and the bar on the ground floor is covered in letterpress blocks.
Top of the bill though is the blog room all the way up in the building. With its high ceilings, covered in black and the beautiful collection of vintage typewriters (oh hello, Mr. Underwood), this place is a sanctuary for writers alike.
I don’t think I have to mention that the smartphone and Instagram use reached a high when we entered this room, now do I?
I’ve been thinking of weekend getaways close to home lately and if we end up in Ghent for the weekend, I sure know where I’ll be spending the night.
